Sarah Palmer Viruses and Variants

Professor Sarah Palmer is the Co-Director of the Centre for Virus Research at The Westmead Institute for Medical Research (WIMR). In this talk she will discuss WIMR’s vital research as part of the global Covid-19 response and detail some of her team’s findings particularly in relation to the Omicron variant. Her team are at the forefront of COVID-related research and have received a NSW Health Covid Research Grant to work on the development of new tests for measuring white T cell immunity.

Sarah Palmer is also a Professor at The University of Sydney School of Medicine. She is a world-renowned HIV researcher who received her PhD at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, focusing on medical virology. Professor Palmer also conducted her post-doctoral studies at Stanford University, Centre for AIDS Research. For 8 years Professor Palmer directed the core virology laboratory for the HIV Drug Resistance Program at the National Institutes of Health in the USA. Her expertise in identifying parts of HIV proteins likely to stimulate human white cell responses, now pivoting her learnings of HIV to COVID-19.
